How It Works
Tamoxifen works by blocking the effects of the hormone estrogen in breast tissue. Many breast cancers need estrogen to grow and multiply. Tamoxifen binds to the estrogen receptors on the cancer cells, which prevents estrogen from attaching and signaling the cells to grow.
In other body tissues, such as the uterus and bones, tamoxifen can act like estrogen (an estrogen agonist), which helps prevent bone loss in postmenopausal women, though this also carries some risks, such as an increased risk of uterine cancer.
